Update. Drove the car while talking to Suzuki shop repair bloke at 40, 60, then 80klms/hr in FWD and AWD, each time putting the car in neutral and revving the engine. The whine was there at all times, increasing and decreasing with the revs so it was rpm related, not speed related. The car went back...

When the dealer first contacted the repairer he said was confident he knew what the problem was. All I know is that after the transfer case was replaced the noise stopped then returned after driving only about 150klms. If the CVT is faulty, wouldn't the noise be still there after the work was done? ...
