While the overall gist of the above is correct, there are a couple clarifications that need to be made:

Batteries sit at 12.6V with no load
Due to the internal resistance of the battery, it needs at least 13.5V to charge, as such, most voltage regulators are set to 14.5V or so to allow some tolerance.

The alternator will supply pressure at 14.5V until you exceed the current limit.

The battery will only supply 12.6V at light load, the more you draw, the lower the voltage goes.
