Auto Color Display in Garmin NAV unit

I own a 2013 Kizashi Sport SLS. I was having issues with the NAV unit after purchasing the 2013/14 Updated Maps and 3.40 firmware.

The on going issue is that the Auto Color Display would not work work when dusk or nightfall would come. Basically the unit did not go to the darker color when it was night.

The other issue is that after the Upgrades and updates were made I could not "Speak and Address" Into the NAV unit. HOWEVER, it would understand every other command like "find fuel" or "find restaurant" or "find place by name" it was extremely frustrating.

I took my kizzy to Northtowne Lincoln Mercury (formerly Northtowne Suzuki) which still is servicing the cars (last dealership in the area) And they advised replacing the Garmin NAV infotainment unit. Well after 3 Months and 2 incorrect orders of which Suzuki or whomever kept sending the wrong unit (RF head unit), so after the 3rd time i go in and they pull the part number of my unit and boom the right one comes in.. Sorry I Digress.

So after the replacement unit is put in, Speech works as i was able to "Speak an Address" When prompted. I also noted it was working quite faster than the old unit.

However, The auto color display is still not working!!!

Looking for any suggestions at this point. my understanding as the headlights come on (auto feature set on the stick) the auto display should go to the night setting.

Thanks for reading my long winded post.

I haven't got that exact unit, but in my Garmin GPS software (on a Kenwood head unit) there's an option for the auto night time lighting. You can either have it switch over automatically, or keep the day light type display.

Perhaps try searching through the set up options- you should have a similar option and it might have been reset with the update?

That is set like I have mine.

Is the time on the head unit working (syncing) okay and reading the correct time? (I'm guessing the auto setting works on the time of day???)

Does it also switch to "night" if you manually select?

It will switch when when manually selected. Brand new head unit. I didn't notice the time so i will check into that . good catch. But in looking at the time on the above pic it is registering the correct time. One more thing. When I switch on my headlights from off to ON (non automatic) the screen tries to change to dark mode.

I'm not sure how the automatic night/ day thing happens. I've always assumed it would be time related as otherwise the screen would go dark if you had your headlights on during the day. But I haven't tried that with mine or noticed it if I have had them on. The two units could also work differently anyway. (I'd go try it now, but I've got the battery out of my Kizashi!)

There's a bit of discussion on Garmin GPS's and the night / day mode here:

By "tries", do you mean it flicks to dark and then back to day?

PS: Have you checked if there are any updates for the head unit's software here https://suzuki.garmin.com/suzuki/

David,

yes it does try to do that. I have seen it happen with the display going from night back to day.

As painful as it is, the dealer sounds like your best option- for another replacement. :(

I was reading thru that posting thread u sent, I am thinking there may be a separate photocell that may be involved. The thing is that what ever it is it's not detecting Dusk or Darkness, the head lamps come on at dusk or dark but does not change the head unit. There is a disconnect somewhere. Frustrating.

Update... well o figured out that the dashboard setting for the brightness of the gauge cluster cannot be turned all the way up. If that is done your color auto display will not work. So the dashboard setting is turned up just inder maximum so now the auto color workd in the NAV unit.
