No Sound From the Stereo

I had the stereo blasting on the way home yesterday and then it when silent. I thought I blew the amp or something. The display on the head unit continued to work but toggling through XM, CD, or radio made no difference.

Less than a minute later the sound came back on and the unit worked like it did before although I was a little leery about turning up the volume again. I have the Fosgate unit.

Does anyone have any idea what happened?

It might have a safety protection cut out built in? Perhaps the amp got too hot???

my noob experience with ICE tells me the same too. The amp could've got too hot leading it to cut off. In which case it really isn't something to worry about :)

Thanks. In case anyone runs into the same issue this is what the folks at Rockford Fosgate told me.

Thanks for contacting us. Yes, if the system is being overdriven the amplifier will go into protection until the volume is turned down and/or the distortion is at a minimum.

So it monitors distortion levels - nice. That would be to protect your speakers from burning out the voice coils.

I doubt that, it's probably just temperature.

No, I'd believe it. In a previous vehicle I owned the factory head unit would not allow the volume to be increased any further if it detected clipping/ distortion.

It's a good idea as that's how people usually kill their speakers (especially subwoofers.)
