Sounds of the ESP Kicking In

Is it just me or did this startle you the first time you heard it, thinking something broke? This sound makes the ABS sound like a whisper.

Or is it just me and something is terribly wrong?

I've dealt with traction control, not ESP. It seems to feel that the car prevents things more than applies things. My understanding is that ESP and traction control works with the throttle and braking to take control and override what errors the driver may make. It's more a subtraction of driver input and if necessary, an input of braking.

ESP, or electronic stability program applies when the car detects sliding or loss of control.

Traction control comes on with excessive wheel spin. I've only dealt with this. No weird noises. I only know it's activating because the light comes on and my tires aren't spinning as much.

My understanding is that the flashing light with the sliding car was the esp system kicking in, whether it is by traction control limitations or whatnot.

However, when this light turn on the other day, it sounds like grinding and feels like a cluth being applied or being released quickly. I've observed this once in a parking lot when I goosed the throttle a bit and the back slid enough for the light to come on, and also the other day when I got stuck in snow and the right front tire would spin. Is there no noise when the light turns on for you guys? Do you have fwd or awd? Maybe that's the difference?

Mine sounds like hammering (as individual brakes are applied, before it chops power).

Loud. Even for this deaf old man......

yes exactly, experienced this phenom many times this winter. Nothing to worry about. The noises and reactions of the car depends on how you drive it

Whew! This sounds exactly like mine too. Are you both awd?

It snowed over the weekend here and I was able to get the Kizzy a bit squirrelly under acceleration (AWD mode). The TCS rarely kicked in which is a bit worrying. I need to experiment some more to become more familiar with the car's limitations. It's "safe" to say the stock tires are crap

Mine is AWD...and it is possible I just haven't pushed it enough in the snow to make it kick in to that extent.
