If you buy the right aftermarket sensors they will work the same. Make sure you get the right ones... I found a set of used ones on eBay for like $80 and they have been working great on my winter wheels. If you go that route, make sure you buy the rebuild kits. I think 4 kits cost me about $20. Maybe less...

I heard somewhere that these TPMS sensors have a tendency to seize up on the cap if its made of metal and does NOT have a rubber seal or thread in the cap. Something to do with the metals binding. I have metal caps, but they have a rubber threaded sleeve, and so far no binding. I'm curious how long these sensors actually last. I'm going on 100K and 5 years old, but I get mixed information on the longevity of these sensors.

I have done it with a used sensor from a Chrysler I got on Ebay. I did it by letting 5+ lbs out of each tire after putting in relearn mode. I really did not expect it to work without a sensor tool but thought what do I have to loose? It worked the first time I tried. I would think using a sensor tool to trigger the sensor would be more difficult and error prone. It can't be much simpler than letting air out of each tire.

I think I put all the part numbers in my dealerless tpms thread. I'm sure I have it in some of my other notes and can dig it up if you can't find it there.

It actually is a bit more difficult with the tool. When switching back to the summer tires this season my Ateq vt30 was giving me some trouble so I was going to use the air method. It started working correctly again so I used the tool, but I'm sure the air method would have worked fine.
