Have you tried with the parking brake engaged?

Assuming your attempt to release the shifter lock was done correctly, I'm wondering...has your car ever had the shifter recall repair performed on it? Not that the recall is for a stuck shifter, quite the opposite. But if someone had been in there monkeying around, who knows what they might have done. If it has, I'd get on the horn to the dealer that did the work and have them deal with it.

Worst case, you'll need to disconnect the shifter cable directly at the transmission in order to manually actuate the trans's shift arm to be able to roll it around for towing or whatever. That is, of course, assuming that the problem isn't within the transmission itself.

Could be a burned out fuse. Check to see if your brake lights work. If not, that's probably your problem.

None of the above... Come to find out that a pesky squirrel place a black walnut
in the linkage preventing the shifter to move ... ;) lucky I have a good mechanic
solved the problem pretty quickly.. thanks for all the suggestions :D
so my car was de nutted...

Those damn things are the automotive debil... Be thankful that's all it did. They really like to chew on wire insulation for some reason.
