Straight out of the service manual (found it while looking for something else):

g. Operate driver door lock knob to "LOCK" position.
4. When Step 3) is completed, the mode changes automatically. Warning buzzer (in combination meter) sounds by the number of specified for each mode as follows.
 Changed from "Passive" mode to "Active" mode: Buzzer sounds 4 times.
 Changed from "Active" mode to "Passive" mode: Buzzer sounds once.

I'm not sure what is meant by 'Active' and 'Passive' mode though.

I'm guessing here, but maybe the difference is the sensitivity.
I'm thinking Active means the type that sounds off on any action that does not involve the key yet access or even contact with the car: pulling the door handles on a locked door, bumping the car, even loud noises, etc.
Passive is maybe only when the car is obviously being broken into such as window breakage and ignition access without any fob/key input.

I believe active means the alarm arms by itself and passive is that you need to arm it. Or vice versa...

I think it's the opposite based on what I saw online.

Passive = alarm automatically arms after engine is off and doors closed
Active = alarm must be manually armed

How about passive = alarm disabled, it won't arm or go off. Active = alarm functions normally with key fob.

Bingo. I was never one to have a passive alarm system. Always wanted to do it myself. Kind of like locking the door to my place before leaving.
