It's a lower average, but pretty typical during the colder weather. Springtime yields the best average of around 28-29 (no A/C or heat running, windows up).

Wow...that is really great. How many miles on the car? Did your average mileage get better over time or were you getting good mileage from the start?

I'm the other guy who came from a Mazda3 to a Kizashi.

It was a Mazda3 S Sport with a 2.3 liter with a 5 speed manual.
My Kizashi is the US-spec GTS model with a 2.4 liter (duh) and a 6 speed manual.

The EPA MPG ratings for both cars are very similar and within a MPG or so of each other for both city and highway.

From my personal observations, the cars get roughly the same MPG. Considering that the Kizashi is larger, heavier, and has a 100cc larger displacement, that's rather nice for the Kizashi. Even if it did get lower MPG, it's well worth it in the level of refinement in both the interior and the ride quality over the Mazda3.
I have yet to take a long trip in the Kizashi, but the best ever MPG I got from a long freeway drive in the Mazda3 was 37 MPG, going about 55 to 65 most of the time. No idea if the Kizashi can top that in similar conditions.

I can't say about the CVT because I have never even driven a CVT car yet. Theoretically, they are supposed to be the most efficient transmissions for internal combustion engines. For the Kizashi and many cars with CVTs, the CVT is supposed to offer better fuel economy than a manual transmission of the same car.

Keep in mind, that's driving like an unbelieveably ancient individual, lost and not knowing where the hell I'm at. In other words having zero fun driving the car.

Car has around 26,500 miles on it. I can't say there was any noticeable increase in economy over those miles (would stand to reason there would be), but, I can say it has a lot more seat of the pants zip to it now, compared to when it was brand new.

My first new Suzuki, an 86 hartop 5-spd Samurai, took forever to break-in, but when it did, it was a very solid, smooth running, peppy little 1.3. It's incredible now that I think about it....that thing was a true 4WD, body on full boxed frame, solid axled vehicle, geared xfer case, carb'd (no EFI) and it got 29-30 mpg all day long. Well, then again, back in 86, gas was gas.

What octane fuel are people using to obtain their figures?

I am using the normal US low grade. I believe it is generally 87 Octane.

same here. I try to buy top tier or name brand fuels when I can. It's not easy around here though.

I also run the car on 87 octane which is Regular fuel in the US.
I see no reason to burn higher octane gas in this engine. Even if I was to get slightly better mileage doing so (which is unlikely), the cost increase in fuel would probably offset any actual monetary savings from better fuel economy.

I filled up yesterday and calculated my fuel economy.
~ 23 MPG via miles driven divided by gallons consumed.
~ 25 MPG average according to the car's MPG display which is consistently 2 MPG above the calculation method above.

I've been doing a lot of city driving recently, but it also includes freeway driving.
I would say the figures fall within EPA calculations for the car and trim.

Ron, I attribute the hills to my poor mpg. The crazy thing is, I have a Ford 500 V6 prior to my kizashi and I did about the same if not better at times mpg on it?

It was a great car, and due to the weight and the HP it did have, I have learned to accept my 20-21 mpg and enjoy the car.

Did anyone see better results when they unhooked the battery? Just curious...
