Thinking about getting a new car. What to get...

That's pretty ironic given the mods I've seen people driving around with on US based 4WD forums. I got the distinct impression that in some states you can do whatever you like!KuroNekko wrote:Not a chance. At 250mm, the Defender’s axles have more ground clearance than most SUVs have body clearance. It will climb and descend a full 45 degrees, and with approach and departure angles of 47 degrees, you don’t need to be too concerned with your angle of attack, either.

Have you thought about getting "Critter Gitters" to build you something custom? http://crittergitters.net/Moto wrote:

(We get the show on TV over here. Once again, it seems like you can make/ drive anything over there!

Yeah.... you can get away with quite a bit in some states.
It depends a lot on where you live. North Dakota is not a state that likes laws. Minnesota on the other hand has more than their fair share. I intend to move back across the river as soon as I start making some real money. Minnesota's income tax is way higher. I also want to start an LLC and they make things slightly difficult if you run an out of state LLC in Minnesota. (technicality I would be doing it to evade unjust taxes/laws)
Minnesota passed a stupid law that dramatically affected ad based revenue for websites. It was so bad that it actually caused people to move out of state. Some of you may have noticed odd links on the site that are inserted by something called Viglink. It used to make nearly enough money to pay the server cost for the site and now it makes nothing.
Anyway enough of that side rant...
I did go check out the jeep today. It was freakishly above freezing so I told them I may come back later for a test drive when the roads aren't all sloppy.
They will get two tailhawks in about a two weeks so I will probably get to test drive one of those before I make a decision. They do have some really nice tech inside, but... I have a feeling I will still go with the subaru. Financing options were better with subaru as well.

When I suggested the Kia, I was suggesting the latest offering. I actually like the look of it now and i am actually impressed by the quality and price. I am, however, a HUGE Subaru fan boy myself and was merely making an alternate suggestion if you wanted to steer the ship away. I'm a firm believer in the Forrester and will more than likely replace my SX4 with either a Forrester or an Imprezza when the time comes.
On the topic of the SX4, have you driven one? I know you said you don't trust your dealer, but I've had mine for 2 years now and i have become extremely confident in it's off road capabilities even in it's present stock form. I admit to being a novice at best to off roading, but the car's capabilities severly outweigh my driving skill. In short, I'll chicken out before the car... I've checked online around here and can find some pretty good offerings for VERY little money. In fact, I have a fellow clubber selling his 2013 with under 10K miles for $12 I think? Anyway, I would suggest giving one a good test run before deciding on the Jeep if that's the way you lean. You may save some money both on the initial purchase and the fuel savings in the long run. If you are into modifying at all, check out the Club SX4 site. Under the name Waggoner and Zacksx4 there are two really good examples of what you can do with the quicky little car....

Oh, and I forgot to mention.....
I got the chance to check out the 2014 Nissan Rogue this week. The older model was hideous at best, but the new one is actually pretty nice! If I read the sticker right, you can get a 6MT with AWD and a turbo if you order it. The one I saw was a CVT (ew....) but it was pretty loaded up for under $23K and the new body styling was great!

Do you guys get the Subaru XV over there? It's sort of like a shorter "softer" Forester.
Those Tailhawks look interesting - we don't get them here. We do have the Compass and Patriot (which don't seem very interesting, or that different from each other apart from cosmetics?)

This site was actually started because I was so impressed with the SX4.sx4rocious wrote: On the topic of the SX4, have you driven one? I found a 2007 AWD manual for about $7k with less than 40,000 miles on it. I believe it was 2008 at the time. I took it for a good test drive and loved the little thing, but I was still in college at the time. Since then the used car market has gone crazy and anything that gets reasonable mileage stays high.
As it is stock it is about 2 inches lower to the ground than most of the vehicles I'm looking at. I do know I could buy it and modify it fairly quickly, but I could probably do that will my current WRX as well. I have seen people get adjustable coil overs and they are able to run about an inch or two higher in the winter. (alignment is probably totally fubar when they do that.)
Yeah we get it, but they don't offer any engines that have much power, and I think the forester's X-mode probably makes it more capable.murcod wrote:Do you guys get the Subaru XV over there? It's sort of like a shorter "softer" Forester.

XVs are actually quite popular around here.
It is sort of funny because 2 years ago you couldn't find a subaru in my area and now they are becoming very popular. (the dealer network expanded a little)
An the latest generation of subarus closed the mileage gap enough on FWDs that people don't care about the mileage much anymore. We have snow or ice up to 7 months out of the year where I live so they are nice to have. I'm still a little confused why more people don't have a second set of winter tires though. They do cost a lot of money, but they have saved me more than once. I will probably always own a second set of tires if I live in a climate that demands them.
It's crazy how all the interstate commerce has each state setting its own laws. This is what the federal government is supposed to do--'regulate interestate commerce'--if I remember my high school civics class correctly.Moto wrote:Yeah.... you can get away with quite a bit in some states.

It would be quite easy to set up a system to pay taxes directly to the federal government vs the state for out-of-state sales, and then the government can pay to the appropriate state. Hell, there are even private companies with the technology and web-sites already built for such operations.
I know the pains of all the tax remittance. The state of alabama has a different tax rates for each city, county, as well as the state. So when I had an auto parts distribution company, if we sold just one part to some po-dunk town, I'd have to file a city, county, and state return for that particular city for the rest of our businesses existance. I was filing 52 returns each month at the end using almost a half a dozen on-line systems. I needed a 12 page spreadsheet to manage it all.

I like viglink as well. It's transparent and does its job well of providing revenue to keep the servers' bills paid. Crazy that they've shut off your revenue. I'd talk to them about this if you haven't already. I met a lot of them at ForumCon and they seemed like they were a pretty helpful bunch.
If you're a contractor that's going to be paid 1099, I'd say a LLC is definitely the way to go, although the catch is that because you'd only be a single member LLC, you would be treated as a sole proproprietor for tax purposes, which limits some of the advantages. But as soon as you add another member (or even another LLC as an member), you gain the full benefits of filing a 1065 for the LLC, completely separating that from your personal return except via the passthrough of the K1 (unless you elect to be treated as a C-corp).
Deleware LLCs were really attractive to bring businesses to the state, but the drawback of entities in different states is that it gets even more messy trying to figure out what needs to be done to keep everything legit. But that being said, it's best to form an LLC where it's not going to move or change. Closing and moving LLCs is a nightmare too.
The 2014 Rogue is not offered with a manual transmission nor a turbo. I believe you were looking at the Nissan Juke, not the Rogue, if you read those stats. I personally like the new styling of the Nissan SUVs, but the only one I'd get is the Xterra. The rest with the CVTs are not compelling and inferior to Toyota's offerings. They are also having issues with the CVTs in these SUVs.
The Subaru XV Crosstrek is merely a raised Impreza. It's not based on the Forester which has an independent chassis (it used to be based on the Impreza, but not anymore).
While XV does look nice, it's only offered with 2.0 H4 so many people complain it's slow. They are releasing a hybrid version, but it does not add to the MPG much on the highway. It's more for city driving.
The Jeep Compass and the Jeep Patriot are car-based CUVs that share the same platform as the late Dodge Caliber and some Mitsubishis. They are not well regarded by critics and trail their competition. Ironically, the Mitsubishi Outlander is the best regarded SUV on this chassis despite Jeep's reputation as a SUV-only brand.
