Fram filters are generally looked down upon because of crappy quality and the use of materials like cardboard that can deteriorate. This was the case with Fram's "orange can" oil filters in the past. I've heard their higher grade filters are better, but many simply avoid the brand. There are horror stories of Fram filters that disintegrated and destroyed an engine from within.
I like to use premium filters given I use synthetic oil and extend my oil change interval to about every 7500 miles. I like Mobil 1, Purolater PureOne (there's a new, even better Purolator filter out now), K&N, and some other top tier oil filters. OEM filters are also pretty good, but can be more cumbersome to obtain and usually aren't as good as the top tier filters I named above.
Just remember than when you extend your oil change interval (OCI), you need to check your oil occasionally to make sure you are not running low on oil. I typically have to fill .5 quarts between oil changes probably due to some burn off. This was the case with Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra in both my Mazda3 and Kizashi.
I got Mobil 1 5W-30 on sale at Costco so I'll be using that next oil change. I'll see how it does about burn off between my OCI.
People are finding that some Purolater oil filters are tearing at the crimp.

Yeah, there have been a lot of reported incidents of torn filter media on the Purolator/Bosch twins, and these are just from those who bothered to cut their filters open.
I was about to get PureOne filters but scored a stash of M1 filters for the same price.

I used to use Purolator PureOne filters years ago on my Impreza, but since have switched to Mobil 1 because I find Purolators harder to find without going out of my way.
If I had a stash, I'd probably still use them unless it was proven that they consistently have this defect and you can expect all from a certain manufacturing time period to have this defect.

I think I will open up the filter I have on the car now and see if I find a tear on my next oil change. That will tell me if I should use the other filters. I still have six left that I bought at the same time. Seems Purolator changed the machine making oil filters and that is when the tear problem started. Hopefully my filters where made before they started using the new machine. Or they discovered the problem and readjusted the crimp pressure before mine where made. I never had the urge to open a used filer before. Not sure how, but I'm sure it will be nasty mess.

That's a good idea to open up the used one and look for the flaw.
I think a hack saw will do the trick, especially on thicker-walled oil filters like the PureOne.
Keep us posted on your findings.

Managed to score some Pennzoil Platinum PurePlus for cheap so I can finally change my oil. Total cost per change will be under $30 with Mobil 1 filters.
The first change was done around 5000km by the dealer using synthetic oil (unknown type) and an OEM filter. This will be the second change at 11000km. I'll try to cut the OEM filter open when I have time

What's to say people aren't tearing the filter media while opening the filters?
I can't imagine they'd be easy to open.

Because the filter media isn't torn where they cut the filter case.
Also, if you look at the pictures, the tear is usually localized to the pleat next to the spine, where the pleat joins the end cap
