I'm thinking of replacing the stock footwell LEDs to red ones so they better match the rest of the interior. Does anyone know what type of LED is used? None of the online references nor the owner's manual list it.

Thanks!

It's not too hard to pull the passenger side lower panel off and have a look. The LED comes out with it from memory.

That's the plan if the information isn't available!

Took a quick look at the LED and they appear to be the same bulb as the glovebox... Will confirm once I actually remove them

Edit: It's not the same

Okay, I thought the footwells were a proper LED. (Isn't the glove box actually an incandescent bulb?)

Took the panel off and I don't think there's an easy way to replace the LED. Disappointing as the amber color doesn't really match anything.

Here's a picture of it

How keen are you? You could cut the loom and join a red LED onto it (remember you'll need a suitable sized resistor in series) or look into disassembling the module.

I'm thinking of it. I have the LEDs, bulb holder and resistors from when I added ambient lighting to my GTI. All I'd have to do is drill a small hole in the panel for the new LED and tap the existing wiring. I'd leave the stock LED unplugged

The glove box bulb is incandescent for sure.

Here's the driver side panel with the new LED in. There's a nice flat spot right next to the stock light. I used wire taps on the stock wiring for power (white is +, gray is -).

The use of LED holders allows me to simply pull the LED out when I remove the panel in the future.

No finished pictures but it's pretty much the same as the stock light but red.
