KuroNekko wrote:The etiquette differs a bit here and there. For example, the Japanese consider passing food from chopsticks to chopsticks a taboo (stems from this being done with bones in funerals) but it's allowed in some instances in China. The Chinese and Japanese also lay their chopsticks down differently. Vertically in China, horizontally in Japan.
The Chinese and Japanese allow you to lift the bowl up with your hand to eat the food with chopsticks while Koreans consider this taboo.
It's taboo in Japan and China to stick chopsticks vertically in rice because this is done in funerals for the deceased.

Here's a rather comical explanation of chopsticks in Japan.

Very interesting. I think I recall seeing sticks vertical in a bowl in Korea as well. Amazing how the wrong gesture can mean something horrifically different, but it's similar to a fob (fresh off the boat) Indian who's in the US pointing with his middle finger.

That video was pretty funny, but explained why I sometimes don't have proper separation of my chopsticks when in restaurants. I'll have to keep trying like in the video.

In the video it also mentions chopsticks made from bone. Is this still common? Are other 'taboo' materials used like ivory?

The video is a parody, but they do have some true facts. They also satirically show the correct way to separate wooden chopsticks, however it works. I've actually never mastered it even after all these years in Japan. The video's instructions work for me to separate them evenly.

I've never seen or heard of bone chopsticks. Same with ivory. The bone thing may have been a joke given the sarcasm of the video. I'll have to check.
Most reusable ones are lacquered wood (more luxurious and formal) or plastic (causal and for kids).

Haha, I've never seen such a long discussions on chopsticks. I use them everyday so I guess I've taken them for granted.

They exist, but aren't very common. I have a set of bone and ivory chopsticks from the times I went back to the motherland. I don't know what type of bone was used but I like to think it's from the bone of defectors. All glory to the People's Republic

The best pair of chopsticks I've ever used were in a stupid expensive restaurant in HK. They were dark wood with gold ends. The gold gave them a nice weighted feel

This picture summarizes the differences between chopsticks from different countries:

Bootymac, for some reason, I always assumed you were a white guy. I should have known better given you are from Vancouver. You know what I mean.

Same. I thought this very thing which also prompts me to post the following video on sushi made by the same folks who made the chopsticks video. Quite funny.

I'm sure there's people that have used this as a real guide as it does seem completely serious because of the tone.

I know what Gari is, lol. My parents love eating it raw, although they can't stand to even watch me eat sushi moreless eat it.

Toro is recycled, lol. I personally don't like the fattier Tuna. But I love Nishin! My favorite next to smelt roe.
