I like the stock dunlop handling

Hi Guys,

I really need new tires! I have the original stock Dunlops with 39K on them though to be fair I did run snow tires this past winter so the Dunlops probably only have 34 or 35k on them. I rotated them every 5K with my oil changes and am generally happy with them. They are however pretty pricey and are generally pretty trashed on this forum so I'm wondering what the best tire is for me. I'd like it to handle and "stick" like it did with the new Dunlops and if I could get the price down (they are $199 ea. on tirerack) or get the wear life up a little that would be a bonus. I have a 2012 SLS AWD BTW.

Thanks,

Joe

There was a really good tire thread a little while back with a lot of firsthand experiences. We have the Bridgestone Potenzas but I haven't switched from the snow set yet to feel how they are.

Another set that has had a lot of happy reviews from Kizashi owners has been the Continentals.

I replaced with Continentals, which I love, but they are definitely softer in the corners. That's the only thing I miss about the Ds.

I have the Continental DWS and haven't noticed much handling difference. The wet weather and noise performance are A LOT better though.

I'd start by browsing through the tyre thread on here, then the Tirerack customer ratings for tyre models available in your size. Tirerack also do their own tests on some model tyres.

I replaced my "D's" that had 45K miles on them with Continental PureContacts. As Firefly said, lost a little in the corners but quieter and a nicer ride. The wet traction was amazingly better. They were reasonable at $160 and they are a low rolling resistence tire. Plus they have the little D W S on them showing wear which is pretty cool.

Anybody have the ProContacts out there? I was stuck between the Pros and the Pures and finally decided on the PureContacts. One thing about tires, once you buy them you're pretty much stuck with them for a long time unless you want to go through the hassle of getting them replaced... or you're WESHOOT2 and then you'll be replacing them in a year.

Ummmm. I have a local tire dealer that gives me great advise. I used to have a Merc E Class. Replacements using recognised brands were expensive ($150 each). I asked him for a good unbranded option and had all 4 replaced. They cost $55 each, and I never noticed the difference. I may not have been able to do 120 mph, but I don't anyway.

Fuzion and General are tire brands; Altimax is the General tire's model; W and V rating are tire speed ratings.
